Stained Glass Windows

Creating a stained glass window using copper foil is different than the method used with lead. The first steps: designing the window, making a pattern, cutting the pieces of glass and laying it out is the same process used when making a leaded glass window. The difference is how the window is constructed.

Assembling the window. Instead of placing a strip of lead between the pieces of glass, each piece of glass is wrapped with copper foil tape. The tape has an adhesive on it that allows it to stick to the glass. After each piece is foiled and layed out on the pattern the window is soldered together. To solder the pieces together flux is applied to the copper tape, then using a soldering iron a continuous bead of solder is applied to the copper foil. This bead simulates the look of lead came. Once the front of the window is completely soldered the sam process is applied to the back.

Patina. Once the window is completely solder front and back the project is complete. However, there is a patina that allows you to change the color of the solder. Apply the patina directly onto the solder and change the color to bright copper, flat copper or black. This sometimes adds a nice effect to the finished project.
